In 2006, Aparna Keshaviah was awarded a U.S. Fulbright Grant in Dance to India to undertake a study entitled "Decoding the Modern Practice of Bharatanatyam," which:
 
 
- Produced an unprecedented statistical
  analysis of Bharatanatyam

- Describes the
diversity of practice and
  interpretation of "tradition"
 
- Maps the propagation of the dance
  across the globe
 
- Reveals disturbing trends that could
  undermine the form's future success
